Origin Zero is a specialised division within Origin Energy dedicated to helping business customers transition to cleaner, more reliable energy solutions. With a bold strategy to accelerate decarbonisation and lead in customer centric energy solutions, Origin Zero needed to execute fast but legacy structures and siloed processes were slowing progress. Teams faced slow decision making, disconnected functions, and an operating model not built for speed, adaptability or cross functional delivery.

The Challenge

Origin Zero had the strategy and market opportunity to lead in decarbonisation but its operating model was the bottleneck. Siloed functions created endless handoffs, decision rights were unclear, and governance slowed rather than enabled progress. Leadership could see the market moving quickly but the organisational structure and ways of working were built for a different era. The risk was not just falling behind competitors in a rapidly evolving energy market, but failing to deliver on Origin’s zero carbon commitments while burning out teams in the process.

Our Approach

We started with two pilot teams to test and iterate, working side by side with leaders and squads to restructure into cross functional value streams aligned to customer segments. We co-designed new rhythms, decision making structures and adaptive ways of working that reflected Origin Zero’s strategy and customer
commitments, then progressively rolled out across the division.

The Shift

Origin Zero moved from siloed functions to cross functional squads that could make decisions closer to the customer. Governance was simplified to enable speed while maintaining appropriate control. Planning rhythms became adaptive, allowing teams to respond to market changes without losing strategic alignment.
Critically, this was not a theoretical model. It was an operating system built specifically for Origin Zero’s decarbonisation ambitions and the complex stakeholder environment they operate in.
